Actos Press Release

Irvine, CA, September 19, 2012- A popular class of type 2 diabetes medication increases patients’ risk of bladder cancer, according to a new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that patients taking thiazolidinedione (TZDs) drugs such as Actos (Pioglitazone) are two to three times more likely to develop bladder cancer than those who took a sulfonylurea drug. Unfortunately, this popular class of diabetes medication accounts for 20% of the diabetes medication prescribed today.

Diabetes patients are already at an increased risk for bladder cancer; an estimated 40 of 100,000 diabetes sufferers develop this kind of cancer in comparison to 30 of 100,000 people in the general population. These margins grow significantly when patients take TZD’s. Patients taking Actos or Avandia for five or more years had double to triple an increased risk of developing bladder cancer in comparison to patients taking sulfonylurea drugs.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there are an estimated 70,530 cases of bladder cancer in the U.S. each year and 14,680 deaths. According to this study, we can expect these numbers to grow to include even more diabetes sufferers. Actos is the ninth most prescribed drug in the nation and an estimated 15 million prescriptions are written for this popular type 2 diabetes medication on a yearly basis.

The FDA has already issued a warning that Actos has severe health risks associated with its use. In response, both France and Germany has taken the dangerous drug off the market. America has yet to take Actos off the market as patients continue to suffer.

Although our government has failed to act to adequately protect you, you do not need to suffer for taking your medication as prescribed. If you or a loved one has developed bladder cancer after taking Actos, you may be entitled to compensation. Please call our firm for a free and confidential consultation.

Ambien Press Release

Irvine, Ca-  A new study published in BMJ Open links a five- fold increase in risk of early death with taking prescription sleep aids such as Ambien.  With over 16 million Americans prescribed Ambien on a yearly basis, these are disturbing figures.  Researchers at Scripps Health in San Diego estimate that in 2010, prescription sleep aids such as Ambien accounted for up to half a million “excess deaths” in the United States.  This was inclusive of not only frequent users, but also the occasional user who took fewer than 2 pills a month.  These infrequent users were still 3 times more likely to die early than non- users.

"We thought maybe sleeping pills are being prescribed for sicker people, so we tried to take that out of the mix in several different ways," the study’s author, Robert Langer said. "The risk was the same whichever way we looked at it. To me, that was the most startling finding. It blows things like high cholesterol or diabetes out of the water."

This study adds to the mounting body of evidence that sleep aids such as Ambien are unsafe.  Similar results were obtained in a 2009 Swedish study following several thousand men and women over a 20 year span.  The study found that men who were frequent users were 4.5 times more likely to die early while women were twice as likely to die early.  And a 2010 Canadian study found prescription sleeping pill users were nearly twice as likely to die early as non- users.

Over 70 million Americans report problems with insomnia every year.  In response, doctors have advocated solutions such as Ambien (zolpidem tartrate), a hypnotic sedative generally used as a sleep aid.  This powerful sleep aid is notorious for serious side effects and dangerous consequences including dependency and overdose. Millions of Americans routinely use Ambien and other sleep aids as a habit. Even when taken as prescribed, there are a number of associated side effects that can include: suicidal thoughts, anxiety, depression, emotional instability, double vision, parasomnia or the continued action during semi- consciousness, muscle and joint pain, nasal and throat irritation, constipation, and amnesia.

If you have lost a loved one due to their taking Ambien as prescribed, you may be entitled to compensation.  Please call our law office today for a free and confidential consultation.

Fosomax Press Release Draft

Irvine, CA- Thousands of women are filing suit against Merck for serious and life altering side effects as the result of taking Fosomax.  Merck has dismissed their pain and suffering as isolated incidents but as the reported cases swell into the thousands, it is becoming impossible to ignore that Merck is gambling with women’s health on this defective drug.

Fosomax (alendronate sodium ,a bisphosphonate drug) is generally prescribed to post- menopausal women to combat the increased risk of osteoporosis.  Merck developed the drug to rebuild bone density in women with osteoporosis and as a preventative measure for high risk women who had not yet developed osteoporosis.   However, long term users began reporting significant side effects associated with its use.  At the 5 year mark, women began to report severe and life altering side effects.  These included jaw bone death, severe thigh bone fractures, esophageal cancer, kidney damage, and vision degeneration.  In light of these serious side effects, the FDA maintains that women without osteoporosis receive few to no benefits taking these drugs and instead place themselves at significant risk for damaging their health.

Between 2005 and 2009, doctors wrote an alarming 150 prescriptions for bisphosphonates.  As medication periods near the 5 year mark, thousands of women are experiencing serious side effects which would never have occurred without taking this dangerous drug. And thousands of women are filing suit against the defective drug’s manufacturer, Merck, for compromising their health.

If you or a loved one has taken Fosomax and have experienced these serious side effects, you may be entitled to compensation.  You do not need to suffer while your medical bills are piling up.  Call us today for a free and confidential case review and consultation.

Granuflo Press Release

Irvine, CA- Patients who received dialysis treatments using Fresenious Medical Care’s  (FMC) products GranuFlo or NaturaLyte are at serious risk for heart attack and death.  The FDA has issued a Class I recall of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte after over 900 initial cases of heart attacks during dialysis treatment.  A Class I recall is the FDA’s most serious recall, issued only in cases with an extremely high probability of death or serious adverse health consequences.

Both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are defective solutions that were used to remove toxins from a patient’s bloodstream.  These solutions were mixed with bicarbonates to reduce the amount of acid buildup in the blood.  However, the mixture proved toxic when it was discovered GranuFlo and NaturaLyte contained increased bicarbonates, which produced an overdose in patients.

FMC was aware of the potential for overdose and subsequent heart attack risk.  An internal memo that was leaked to the FDA warned of “troubling findings” which they shared with doctors in their network.  They did not share this information with over 125,000 patients receiving care at non- FMC clinics. And they did not make the public aware of these risks until their internal memo was leaked to the FDA.

If you or a loved one experienced severe health complications as a result of dialysis, please contact our firm today to receive a free and confidential consultation.  You should not be forced to suffer further after receiving medical treatments.

OB Sling Press Release

Irvine, CA, September 17, 2012-  Six years after the Mentor OB Tape vaginal sling was recalled, women continue to experience severe pain and complications associated with their surgery.  Thousands of women across the United States are reporting severe life altering complications and side effects associated with implantation of their Mentor OB Tape vaginal sling.  The onset of severe problems was not immediate in some women and has appeared slowly, years after implantation.

The Mentor OB Tape vaginal sling was originally intended to solve a problem of stress urinary incontinence in women. Typically stress urinary incontinence is the result of hormonal changes after pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause wherein the vaginal muscles weaken.  Stressful movements such as coughing or exercise can cause small amounts of urine to leak, causing many women great discomfort and embarrassment.  However, the Mentor OB Tape vaginal sling was recalled 3 years after its introduction on the market due to severe reactions and side effects associated with its use.  These side effects left many women permanently scarred and experiencing debilitating pain.

Thousands of women began to experience severe problems such as infections, pain in the abdomen and other areas, problems or pain associated with intercourse, abnormal vaginal discharge, bleeding, etc… These problems ranged from the cause of mild embarrassment to serious life altering problems requiring successive surgeries. Despite protests from the manufacturer that these were isolated occurrences, studies have stated the opposite, that it is a common side effect associated with this device.  One such study is a 2006 study in the Journal of Urology which reported that among 67 Mentor OB Tape vaginal sling patients, “13.4% have had vaginal extrusions of the sling.” Many more women in the study also reported severe pain, infection, and complications.

In 2008 the FDA warned that of a group of 35,000 women who had the Mentor OB Tape vaginal sling implanted, over a thousand women reported similar serious adverse consequences such as erosion.  The FDA warned physicians that the use of this medical device could seriously affect the future quality of their patients’ lives.

Women who have experienced serious complications as a result of the implanted vaginal sling have had to endure costly successive surgeries, blood transfusions, drainage of abscesses and hematomas, etc… Many of these women’s lives have been forever damaged because of the implanted device.

If you or someone you know has experienced these serious side effects as a result of the OB Tape vaginal sling implant, you may be entitled to compensation.  You do not have to endure even more suffering as your bills pile up and the surgeries seem to keep coming.  You can call our law firm today and receive a free, personal and confidential consultation right over the phone.  We are sympathetic to your suffering.

Pradaxa Press Release

Irvine, CA, September 20, 2012- The Law Offices of Andrew Wright would like to warn patients taking Pradaxa that this popular anti- coagulant medication has been linked by experts to fatal internal bleeding.  On August 19, 2012, USA Today reported the FDA received 3,781 reports of side effects including 542 deaths among Pradaxa users last year alone.  While the FDA compiles its post market safety review, a federal judge has ruled that litigants may proceed legally against the manufacturer.

Pradaxa (dabigatran) is a popular blood thinning medication taken by atrial fibrillation patients to prevent the blood clots that lead to stroke.  Manufacturer Boehringer- Ingelheim reports their medication has been expanded for use in 70 countries with a combined prescription experience of 1 million patient years.  However, recent reports of fatal bleeds have led experts to question its safety over its popular competitor, Wafarin, which was also riddled with safety complaints.

"The good news is you now have an alternative to warfarin," said Dr. Alan Jacobson, director of anti-coagulation services at the Veterans Administration healthcare system in Loma Linda, California. "The bad news is you can kill a patient as easily with the new drug as you could with the old drug.”

Manufacturer framed Pradaxa as superior to its competitor because it required less daily monitoring on the doctor’s end.  However, the tradeoff has been an increase in internal bleeds that could be potentially fatal.  Unlike its competitors, Pradaxa does not have an antidote.  If patients on Wafarin experience a bleed, doctors can administer a small shot of Vitamin K to stop the bleed. However, Vitamin K does not work to reverse the effects of Pradaxa.  No known medication reverses the effects of Pradaxa.  In cases of internal bleeding, doctors have few options; they can attempt an emergency dialysis or watch their patient die.

If you have lost a loved one to bleeding associated with Pradaxa use, you should contact an attorney to discuss your legal options.  Your family deserves justice.  Please call our firm today for a free and confidential consultation.

SSRI Press Release

Irvine, CA, September 19, 2012-  The Law Offices of Andrew Wright Law would like to warn mothers taking antidepressant SSRI medications that they may be unknowingly placing their unborn children’s’ lives at serious risk for birth defects.  These medications include: Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Lexapro, Luvox, and Viibryd.  The FDA warns that based on numerous recent studies, expectant mothers taking SSRI’s have a 1 to 2 times greater risk of having serious birth defects, particularly heart and lung problems.

There are numerous recent studies with heartbreaking and frightening results.  In each of these studies, the expectant mothers who took their antidepressant drugs as prescribed put their babies at significant risk.  According to a study conducted by the National Institute of Health, between 20% and 30% of newborns exposed to SSRI’s have disorders such as agitation, abnormal muscle tone and suction, seizures and hyponatraemia characterized by abnormal mental development.  This means that 1 in 5 babies could potentially have seizures and mental disorders.  A recent New England Journal of Medicine study also cites SSRI’s as a cause of significant risk of a fatal heart and lung condition called persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN).  And the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology reports a 3 times greater risk for heart defects in babies born to mothers taking SSRI’s while pregnant.  These are not isolated cases and instead reflect a growing concern for expectant mothers and health practitioners.

Expectant mothers want to do the right thing and protect their unborn children.  And in doing so, tend to trust the medication that their doctor prescribed is safe.  Therefore, many mothers do not know that their antidepressant medication is a danger to their unborn child.  According to a recent Annals of Internal Medicine study, 50% of women taking prescription drugs during pregnancy were unaware that these drugs could cause birth defects because they had not been warned about the potential side effects and complications that getting pregnant while on the drugs could cause.

Mothers do not need to risk their babies’ health unnecessarily because of a bad drug.  If you or a loved one has taken an SSRI antidepressant and given birth to a baby exhibiting birth defects or birth injuries, you may be entitled to compensation.  Call our law firm today for a free, confidential and caring consultation.

Transvaginal Mesh Press Release

Irvine, CA, September 16, 2012- The Law Offices of Andrew Wright announced today that they are now accepting new product liability cases concerning complications due to transvaginal placement of surgical mesh.  New clients are sought who have problems associated with transvaginal placement of surgical mesh to repair pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence.

Transvaginal placement of surgical mesh is a polypropylene or xenograft (animal or human tissue) surgically implanted to strengthen the weakened vaginal wall.  Introduced in the mid- 1990’s, this surgical procedure was introduced to permanently fix the problems that plague older women after childbirth, menopause, and hysterectomy.  Prolapse occurs when the pelvic muscles weaken and the pelvic organs drop into the vagina. To repair this problem, a hammock shaped piece of surgical mesh is inserted into the vagina to support the organs.

The main problems that women are reporting are attributed to exposure of the mesh.  Approximately 10% of women experience mesh erosion which could potentially lead to severe pelvis pain, painful sexual intercourse, or an inability to engage in sexual intercourse.  Men may also experience pain during sexual intercourse due to the mesh erosion.  In response to the many reported problems, the FDA has released a warning that these are not rare occurrences.  The FDA warns that this surgery may be less effective than more traditional methods and may expose women to significantly greater risks.

“Given the absence of evidence for clinically significant benefit and the overwhelming evidence of very serious, common risks, use of synthetic surgical mesh products for transvaginal repair of POP is not ethically justifiable,” said Dr. Michael Carome, deputy director of Public Citizen’s Health Research.

If you or a loved one has experienced complications as a result of your transvaginal mesh surgery, you may be entitled to compensation and equitable relief.  Please call our firm today for a free and confidential consultation.
